ENGINEERS’ GUILD OF SRI LANKA

(Formed – 21 November 1979)
(Joined OPA in 1981)
(Registered with the Registrar of Companies – 11 August 1993)
(Reg. Number: GA 744 – 25.06.2014)

Engineers’ Guild of Sri Lanka was formed in the year 1979. Senior qualified professionals joined hands with academics and qualified senior engineers working in various capacities in the state sector and in the private sector were responsible in forming the Engineers Guild of Sri Lanka. It has turned to be one of the most active member associations of OPA. EGSL joined the OPA in 1987 as the 14 th Member Association. The objective of forming the association is mainly bringing together very senior engineers who did not have a Charter because of stringent rules and regulations to fulfill for a Charter at that time.

EGSL did not allow them to be cut off from the engineering society. Had we not formed the Guild on time the profession itself would have lost their knowledge and experience. This gave vent to form the Engineers’ Guild to socialize in engineering society, all these great men involved in responsible engineering practice, to absorb and recognize them in the engineering brotherhood. This idea was originated by the Late Professor EOE Pereira, then Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ceylon, whom all recognize today as the father of Engineering Education in Sri Lanka. This was implemented by the founder of Engineers’ Guild of Sri Lanka Eng L R L Perera who later became the President of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka and the President of Organization of Professional Association of Sri Lanka.

EGSL is not an academic institution, not a training organization, not a trade union nor a club but one with prime aim to uphold the status and dignity of the engineering profession and the individuals in the engineering profession to look after their welfare certainly and to help and guide wherever possible with their work. EGSL members are involved in design, investigation, project management, construction, operation, maintenance work in engineering development projects as engineers and managers in Sri Lanka and Abroad.

We should be happy today that among engineers’ organizations the Engineers Guild afford maximum social interaction among engineers. We were the 2 nd out of 3 engineering profession to obtain the membership in OPA. Since membership of the OPA in the year 1987 the facilities available at the OPA helped the Guild to fulfill this task while subscribing to the OPA aims and objectives as well.
